an elegant, kind, magnanimous, and loyal supporter of Home for Life®

of the nursing homes and assisted living facilities throughout the Twin

John Robert Bryan, age 27, was called to Heaven early on May 25th. John
was born in Edina, MN on January 16, 1981 and graduated from Edina High
School in 1999. Since his graduation, John has been a man of many projects.
He was happiest when using his hands, always an artistic creator. John
could take common tasks and make them artful in a way no one else could've
imagined. John was accomplished in home carpentry, car audio and electronics,
customizing cars and other things that caught his fascination. The name
of his business "Johnny B Custom" was in fact a lifestyle for
him. John spent much of the past two years creating his family's log home
with his father. He plunged his soul into his projects, always doing them
whole-heartedly. John enjoyed boating, motorcycling, playing with his
dogs and having movie nights with friends. He also enjoyed many good times
with family at the cabin as well as his most recent rekindling of great
friendships. He was a kind-hearted person, always willing to help others
for things big or small at a moment's notice. His calm, welcoming and
loving spirit will be forever etched in the hearts of his family and friends.

Marilyn
Heffley passed away on April 27, 2008 at the very unexpected age of 56.
Marilyn was a great animal lover and over her lifetime she owned five cats.
The cat in the picture is Buddy, a registered American short-haired red
with white classic tabby. Marilyn adopted Buddy in February 2007. Marilyn
was always ready to help a wayward animal and saved several from a hard
life. Marilyn always wanted to work with an animal shelter when she retired,
and Home for Life was her favorite. Marilyn's husband Mike said that he
has lost his soul mate and the animals in this area have lost a wonderful
caretaker.–Mike Heffley

In memory of Brian Clark Phetteplace, donations were sent to Home for Life®,
an organization that Brian was proud to donate to. He was very touched by
Home for Life's® beginnings, ongoing story, and the wonderful
work the organization does. Brian, in his 52 years, gave not only us human
friends a companion, but also those of furry nature. He cared deeply for
animals; feeding the birds at work each day. This feeding routine soon extended
to rabbits. His beloved cat Elsa and dog Jake are now reunited with Brian.
His big cat Jingle who was adopted from the Woodbury Humane Society now
lives with his daughter, Jamie and her other two cats. In writing this memorial,
I (his daughter) believe that God needed another caretaker for all those
animals and beloved pets that are waiting for us in Heaven. Thank you on
behalf of my father, for all of you who donated money towards the betterment
of animals' lives and for all the good work Home for Life®
does. It is a truly special organization. We love you, Dad.–Jamie Nelson (Brian's daughter)

Some thoughts about Theo:
He didn't just enter a room — he'd announce it with a mew —
loudly, on every step — just in case nobody noticed, and carrying
that magnificent tail like a flag!
He didn't site or lie flat — he'd rest his elbow on us, our legs, or event one of our shoes. When he plonked himself down on his choice of legs in our bed, it was just that — no dainty settling down for him —it was a solid thump, elbow first (that hurt!). Maybe this way he'd make sure that when we got up, he'd be ready and waiting to be fed! Or maybe he just liked us. Do cats love people? We loved him. I think he liked us — but he did like to be fed too...
Hairballs — ugh! Apparently he didn't like them either...
When he was a kitten, he'd "hide" amongst all the stuffed toys, but as he grew to be a really "proper cat," the toys were too undignified. He was a dog in cats' clothing — fetching whatever came natural to him. HE was a great mouse catcher too — just liked to play with them though — left the disposal to Ted!
The end of his short life came all too suddenly for the rest of his family — he became listless and wouldn't or couldn't eat, be we did hope that he'd "come around" after a couple days at the veterinary clinic. We brought him home and new and then saw signs of improvement only to see that he was in pain, and that shots of painkillers were a necessity. The kind and thoughtful folks at the clinic helped a lot, but the look of pain on the doctor's face when we took him in for the last time told the whole story; the prognosis was not good.
We don't know whether cats love, or whether they even have such feelings, or whether they just feel secure and happy, and recognize us as their "family." We just hang on to the hope that they do, because in those last moments as the light faded slowly from those great big beautiful eyes, we have to believe his final vision was of the love and the pain in the eyes of his family, saying a reluctant and fond goodbye to one of ours who will be sorely missed.
